~ Bermuda July to December
2005 |

Well hello everyone! It's been quite awhile since our posting to "Life is a Beach" last April. It's not that we've been forgetful of our readers but just how many photographs of pink sand beaches and turquoise water do you want to see? Or for that matter, pictures of Lori and myself? Well it's been four months so I'll post a few of Lori's images. Over the last few months we've been hard at work, Lori with her photography and me at the Incinerator. In our off days we golf and party with friends ... usually at a beach somewhere. Last month we flew to West Palm Beach in Florida to photograph a wedding. We took the opportunity to rent a car and drive down to the Keys. At left is a self portrait Lori took of herself utilizing a "back-light". The art of photography is an ongoing learning curve and we are constantly experimenting with different lighting, posing, angles, etc. |

On May 11th we celebrated Mother's day. Lori got flowers and a special brunch. Of course July first was Canada Day and we partied at Chaplin Bay Beach. Most Canadians in Bermuda show up for this event. At right you can see people fueling up on Rum Swizzle. It was a hot day but the water was close, the music great and the food plentiful. Eat your heart out brother Randy! (He missed it this year) |

The Kiskadees are active as usual in our back yard this summer. It's seldom we have a chance to pick a ripe paw-paw as the birds and "tree rats" usually get to them first. In these images you see a parent Kiskadee feeding a young one freshly out of the nest. The green paw-paws are a favorite in Bermudian cooking, often ending up in beef and paw-paw pies. They also make an excellent meat tenderizer. The milky juice from the paw-paw actually burns the skin. Lori has even used the juice as a facial treatment. |

These little guys are very friendly, often wanting to come in and live with us in the apartment. Once indoors they hide behind pictures hanging on the wall. I see them as a natural means of pest control, although I'm not sure if they could take on a cucaracha! They are another favorite subject for Lori's camera. |

Astwood Beach with Longtail |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Longtails have been nesting in the last few months and are wonderful to watch while lounging on the beach. Playful with each other in the air and curious of human visitors, these birds are a favorite of Bermuda. Often holes in the rock formations house a baby Longtail who stay in the nest for a lengthily period of time.

You would think that after three years on this small Island one would have visited every beach in existence, but such is not the case. Bermuda recently opened up Cooper's Island to the public. In the past it was an american army base. The beach at Cooper's Island is wonderful. It is well worth the fifteen minute walk and usually few others to share it's beauty. Pictured at left, Lori poses on the anchor monument at the entrance to Cooper's Island. Mouse over for a close up. |

Lori spent hours with her telephoto lens perched on the cliffs of our Cross Bay beach to get an image of a Longtail like this. Again, as with all the pictures in these postings, you can double click on it to see a full screen version.
The roads of Bermuda are not only narrow but when confronted with horses and buggy, one backs up. We encountered this crowd of tourists on our way to Tobacco Bay. It's an image worth double clicking on to enlarge.
In July, Lori and I hopped over to West Palm Beach to photograph Dani and Frannie's wedding. If you want to see a show of the wedding, it'll soon be on Lori's web gallery. After the event, we rented a P.T.Cruiser convertible and headed South to the florida Keys. Above is a picture of some pervert waiting for the "Better Than Sex" store to open in Key West. At left, Lori poses in front of a door, also in the party town of Key West. |

This statue is enormous! Entitled "God Bless America", I imagine it depicts early settlers to Florida. | Who's head would you rather see cast in bronze?
Back in West Palm Beach, Lori searches for the best photographic background for "after wedding" shots. Of course you know who is forced to pose. This scene is in the garden behind the church where Kennedy got married.
It was very hot in Florida and the coastline seems to be one beautiful beach. The image to the right was taken early morning from our hotel room.
FLOWERS! |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
We couldn't have a posting to "Life is a Beach" without a golf shot! Here I am pitching onto the green below. If you mouse over the image you'll see how I've improved at the game. What fine form!
The above image is of the infinity pool at The Reef. Lori walked down one clear evening and took the picture. It is a good example of how beautiful the natural light is in the evenings. At right is what I like to call Lori's "working girl" picture. Driving about downtown Hamilton we are always on the lookout for the perfect setting. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
One of our favorite spots to spend the day is Astwood beach. We have our little private niche in the cliffs and with a good book, picnic lunch and a bottle of wine we are set. Actually the above picture was taken by both myself and Lori of each other and then we "joined" the two images. Of course there is also the camera and Lori's insistence on taking pictures.... "Go over and get on that rock!" |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Me on a very sharp rock! |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
So that is all for now. As you see, we are both alive and well and enjoying life. I've applied for a three year extension to my contract working for the Bermudian government and have been accepted. So although these postings about life in Bermuda might become more infrequent, they will probably continue for awhile yet. Below is a picture of Warwick Long Bay. Believe it or not, the water is really that colour! |
